SULPHUR SPRINGS, TX (KLTV) -

After much talk about them, Sulphur Springs has finally debuted their all-glass bathrooms located on their downtown square.

The artistic restrooms are the first of its kind here in the United States.

"I was excited about it. I think it's really neat and I have been standing outside long enough to know that I could not see in. So it wasn't too bad, but it was strange when you had four men standing out there looking in the door, but they couldn't see me," says Sulphur Springs resident, Meredith Caddell.

The restrooms were modeled after Italian artist, Monica Bonivicini's art piece - 'Don't Miss A Sec' from 2004, which was located outside an art museum in Switzerland.

While the resemblance is pretty on par, there are a couple of things that had to be changed in order for the restrooms to meet code.

"There's no steel frame holding up the architectural exhibit and so this has a stainless steel frame inside. Also, the other one had see through glass on all four walls and this one only has three see through glass. We had to have a place to hide all the plumbing, air conditioning and heating because this is heated and cooled unlike the one that the artist did. So it meets code for one and it's a lot more durable in the long run," says Sulphur Springs City Manager, Marc Maxwell.

The city says for citizens who may be wondering if the restrooms are safe to have on the square, not to worry, they have cameras on the square.

"If you take a look around we've got nine cameras here on this square watching what goes on. They're all monitored at the police department and they're all recording in HD color. So trust me, this is the last place a creep wants to hang out," says Maxwell.

The restrooms will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. everyday.
