The family of a special needs student says they need more answers about how the child apparently walked away from school without teachers or staff knowing about it.
The boy was a first grader at Jonesboro Elementary School in Bessemer. His family says on October 17th, a neighbor arrived to pick up the boy, but was told no one knew where he was.
Officials believe he mistakenly lined up with other children who walk home from school. The boy's family says they've been given different stories about why this happened and they say school officials have not apologized for the situation.
"We're still just so upset and we don't have the answers we want and we want them to be held accountable because we don't want this to happen to anyone else," said the boy's grandmother, Yvette Hunter.
The school's principal says they accept responsibility for the situation, and reprimanded three teachers involved. New dismissal procedures are now in place because of the incident. The student's family has now moved the boy to another school.
