Tailgating on Turkey Day Classic eve

You could barely get down Carter Hill Road Wednesday near Alabama State University, as alumni and students started tailgating on and around campus.

"And to be here at this festive occasion; I'm just happy," ASU Alumni Robert Watson said.

About 200 people gathered at Heritage Barber Shop. The owner is an ASU grad so it was only fitting for him to host a Turkey Day Classic reunion tailgate party.

"But this whole week is about the Hornet nation, bringing us altogether as a family and it's time for us to come home. We're back on campus and everybody's excited about it," ASU senior Maya McKenzie said.

Food, fellowship, laughs and hugs were what this reunion was all about as many returned to their alma mater to witness new stadium inaugural debut.

"It's good to see people you haven't seen in a while. So that make the whole thing great, Plus the new stadium; Alabama State verses Tuskegee, you can't beat that," Watson said.

"You can tell the real sense of community that we have here at ASU. You know we have people over there with RV's, people over here tailgating not far from campus and tonight is the student tailgate and there are a lot of students staying home, yeah staying at home at Alabama State for Thanksgiving and so we are really excited," McKenzie said.

J.R. Norman and has family have been camping out since 1996.

"We started at Cramton Bowl with maybe 3 or 4 RV's and now we can't count them all," Norman said.

About 75 RV's were lined up across from the barber shop on campus; a very special moment for long-time tailgaters like the Norman family.

"It's very important and something we've been looking forward to several years and it finally happened," Norman said.

The student tailgating event will kick off at midnight on campus.
