2 more charged in Independence triple homicide

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Two more people have been charged in an Independence triple homicide, bringing the total to four.

Jackson County prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced Thursday that Raul Soto, 22, of Kansas City, KS, and Bobby Jo Phillips, 37, of Independence face nine felony counts, including three counts of first-degree murder, first-degree assault and four counts of armed criminal action.

Two others, Antonio Cervantes III, 32, and Kevin M. Finley, 33, were charged Wednesday in the triple homicide.

All four defendants are accused in the Nov. 16 shootings that killed 48-year-old Maria Hernandez; her 20-year-old son, Antonio Hernandez; and Tomas Dominguez, previously identified as Tomas Madrigal.

A 12-year-old boy is recovering from critical injuries after being shot in the face and chest.  Some of the victims had their hands and mouths bound with duct tape.

According to court records, the men planned to rob Cervantes' stepfather for drugs and cash.

Independence police detectives worked through the night to investigate the crimes, resulting in the additional charges Thursday.

The defendants are being held in the Jackson County Detention Center without bond.

Baker praises the Independence Police Department for its quick and thorough investigation that has resulted in charges against the four defendants.

"The community benefits immeasurably from this kind of stellar police work," Baker said.

The investigation into the triple homicide is ongoing, Baker noted.

No information was available on whether the suspects had lawyers.
