Unseasonably warm weather greets thousands attending Plaza lighting ceremony

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

The weather is fantastic for everyone who is headed down to the Country Club Plaza for the start of the holiday season.

Some people are already staking out a place to watch the lights come on.

Three players from the Major League Soccer team Sporting Kansas City will help light up the Plaza on Thanksgiving night.

Matt Besler, Kei Kamara and Jimmy Nielsen will flip the switch that turns on more than 250,000 lights outlining buildings in the upscale shopping and dining district.

The festivities also will include fireworks and musical performances.

However, there are two big changes in Kansas City this year including unseasonably warm weather and a new stage location on the west side of the Plaza by Brio and the movie theater.

Hours before the festivities started people were still just trickling in, maybe using the warm weather to tackle their leaves before the daylight slips away.

The buskers were getting in position to get their take from the crowd while one unannounced special guest was dressed for the warm weather greeting children.

Terry Templeton, who plays Santa for a living, had some of the children attending the Plaza Lighting unsure what to make of his Hawaiian attire.

Templeton says he gets looks year-round, even without the uniform.

"There was one little girl in some restaurant and she was doing something, so when I got up, I went over, asked her if she'd been good. It was great," Templeton said.

The Plaza lighting ceremony is in its 83rd year and regularly draws tens of thousands of people. This year, the lights will shine daily from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. through Jan. 13.
