AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -
More than a week after a fire severely damaged the oaks at Toomer's Corner, Auburn University officials are reportingmost of the foliage at the base and canopy of both trees either browned or fallen off.
Officials say because of the timing of the fire, the trees are not likely to form any new leaves before next spring. They believe damage will also leave the trees without foliage all winter - further reducing photosynthesis or the trees' ability to survive.
The oak tree closest to Toomer's Corner on Magnolia Avenue has scorched foliage at the canopy and base. The other tree, which is located close to College Street, has scorched foliage at the base and nearly no foliage in the canopy. The shoots at the base of both of the trees are dead.
Officials say the trees were already in a severe state of decline due to poisoning and the latest fire damage will further weaken the trees.
No one has been charged in the fire which happened on a Sunday morning after the school's football victory.
Alabama fan, Harvey Updyke, was charged with poisoning the beloved oaks nearly two years ago. He is currently undergoing mental screening.
