COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

In the 1980's Cabbage Patch dolls were hot during the holiday shopping season.

Tickle Me Elmo was the hot toy of the 1990's. Kids are dreaming of different toys this year and there are four groups parents need to scope out.

The first group is tech. For little ones, The Leap Pad 2 is out now with a second camera and faster processor. Meantime, the iPad is all the rage for just about every other age. Also, your tech toys turn into game controllers.

If you want something more traditional, the second category is construction toys. LEGO has a line just for girls. There are also chunkier versions for toddlers with small hands and even Angry Birds is into the build-it craze.

The third category is crafts with a huge toy train you can color and crawl through, to the Crayola Marker Air Brush.

Pop culture rounds out the final toy category. This year, Chuggington is taking train fans to a new level. It's over two-feet high. The radio-controlled Batman car comes pre-programmed with commands. Disney's Doc McStuffins is in demand.

If you want the best shopping advice, do not wait to buy the toys if you see them on shelves because retailers usually don't overstock so start shopping now.

The stores are now using QR codes, which are little labels you can scan that allows you to still buy a toy and have it shipped to your home if it is sold out on the store shelves.
