MARICOPA, AZ (CBS5) -
Police have identified a 26-year-old employee who was found dead of apparent gunshot wounds Tuesday morning at the Maricopa location of Arizona Grain, police said.
The victim is Orlando Requena of Casa Grande, a trainman for Arizona Grain. He helped to offload train cars.
"He was an awesome guy. I don't understand why he would be taken from us," said Nancy Munoz, Requena's cousin. "It's like a shock to everybody. Everybody's thinking, 'Why him?'"
Munoz says her cousin was the father of three little boys and usually worked during the day. Once in a while he would be called in overnight to unload a train. That was the case Monday night.
Requena's body was found in an off-load area outside the main buildings.
"The incident does not appear to be a random act of violence," said Maricopa police spokeswoman Jenny Alsidez. "We have nothing to substantiate that this is a high-crime area."
Maricopa police said a 911 call came from another employee of the company at 38501 Cowtown Rd. about 2:45 a.m. reporting that a co-worker had been shot. Requena was one of four employees working the shift.
Shell casings from what appears to be a handgun were found at the scene, Alsidez said. She added that Requena was apparently caught off guard.
The suspect is at large. The only available description is that the gunman was wearing a dark-colored ski mask and appeared to be 5'8" to 6' tall with a medium build.
The Maricopa Police Department and the Pinal County Attorney's Office are asking for the public's help regarding any vehicles seen parked on Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway near Arizona Grain between 2:30 a.m. and 2:45 a.m. Tuesday. Anyone with information is urged to call Silent Witness at 602-262-7667.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety and Union Pacific Railroad were assisting in the investigation.
Requena had worked at Arizona Grain for two years.
"He's going to be missed a lot, because he meant the world to everybody," said Munoz.
No other information was immediately available.
