MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - A Montgomery Public School District
Assistant Superintendent is soon to be unemployed after the board, in a
4-2 decision, voted to terminate him and he opted to settle the terms of
his employment.
After a two-day hearing that ended this
afternoon, Lewis Washington is no longer an employee of the Montgomery
Public School District.
In a letter drafted in September, MPS
Superintendent Barbara Thompson recommended Washington for termination
on allegations of sexual harassment and ethics violations.
In the letter Thompson names these terms for Washington's dismissal:
1.
During the 2011-2012 school year, you were accused of sexually
harassing a co-worker. That co-worker ultimately resigned her position
and filed an EEOC charge against the district related to your conduct.
2.
You sent text messages to the co-worker which read "I love u," "Want
you," that you were "Home. Wanting.", "I think you miss me W," and
others. You provided false information during the course of the sexual
harassment investigation; specifically that you had never sent the
co-worker "romantic" text messages or asked her to engage in a romantic
or sexual relationship.
3. In 2011 and 2012, you
solicited principals you supervise to hire your son to do restriping
work for the district in violation of Board Policy and/or state law.
4. These and other allegations have hurt your ability to be an effective supervisor for this district.
Washington
was originally offered a settlement by MPS. Board members then voted to
terminate Washington's employment. Washington ultimately opted to
settle the terms of his employment.
