White Hall owners willingly forfeit money, machines

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

What's next for the White Hall Entertainment center?

Even owners of the facility can't answer that question.

But a lawyer for the owners says the Attorney General's final ruling on their machines and money didn't come as a surprise.

For three years White Hall Entertainment has been closed.  After three years of litigation with the State of Alabama, owners are calling it quits.

"My client and also our partner who supplied us with gaming machines, we all decided that this litigation was actually taking a toll on them financially," says Attorney Collins Pettaway, Jr.

Pettaway says White Hall facility owners and gaming machine owners reached a settlement with the state giving the Attorney General control of the bingo machines and more than $500,000 dollars.

"Cost of litigation sometimes bears on you and also the stress and uncertainty of what's going on," says Pettaway.

What is uncertain, though, the future of the building.

Pettaway wouldn't elaborate on how much it costs owners to operate each month.

He simply says they're looking at other ways to use it and that it may or may not include gambling.

"That's a small possibility at this point."

Pettaway doesn't believe the White Hall ruling has a bearing on other gaming facilities like Victoryland, for instance.

But the Attorney General's office released this statement:

"This ruling emphasizes that there is no reasonable argument that these so-called ‘electronic bingo' machines are legal anywhere in Alabama. Slot machines are illegal in all 67 counties, including Macon County."

WSFA 12 News reached out to Victoryland attorneys for their take on the ruling, but have yet to hear from them.
