Ala. EMA team returns from Sandy response

Clanton-Alabama Emergency Management Agency Director Art Faulkner and staff welcomed the nine-person Incident Management Team back to Clanton on Tuesday. The unit completed a 14-day mission in some of the hardest hit areas in New York, as a result of Superstorm Sandy.

"Each member of this team worked tirelessly to help people who lost so much to the storm," Governor Bentley said.  "The Alabama team that went to the Northeast was requested by FEMA because of the outstanding work the team did here in Alabama following the April 2011 tornadoes.  They have the experience needed to help communities recovering from natural disasters, and I am so proud of how well they represent our state."

Team members were supporting the Federal Emergency Management Agency because of their experience in disaster response and with the National Incident Management System. The staff deployed to the Joint Field Office in Queens, New York, but they also worked in Brooklyn, Staten Island, and Long Island.

"The team that deployed to New York learned so many valuable lessons that will benefit the residents of Alabama in the future," EMA Director Art Faulkner said. "They sacrificed a lot and that is why the entire agency is proud of what they accomplished."

The recovery mission for Hurricane Sandy will continue for years and more teams from the agency may be deployed in the future.
