SUMTER COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

In West Alabama, thieves hit a charity seeking to make Christmas bright for others. Now, those volunteers are wondering how they will help those in need.

Operation HomeCare opened in York, Sumter County, and they've helped others after disasters like the tornado that hit the Geiger community April 15, 2011.

Now the organization faces its own disaster after a major theft.

"The headline was going to say, New York helps York," Cynthia Brooks with Operation HomeCare.

Now the only headlines Brooks thinks about are on a police report.

"Those people took out their time and money to donate to York, Alabama. Which they're already in a disaster and then now we can't even carry out what they did for us to give to families," Brooks said.

Sometime between Sunday and Monday, thieves broke into Operation HomeCare's warehouse in York. In hours, they stole what took months to collect.

"This is a total setback. Now I don't know what we're going to do," Brooks said.

They stole more than cleaning supplies. Crooks cleaned out entire shelves of baby food and other essentials.

"You could walk through the backdoor. They was just taking stuff from the back so they could load up trucks," Brooks said.

Thieves broke in through a window, then used bolt cutters to cut the locks on a door. They stole whole pallets of gifts and furniture meant for tornado and fire victims.

"They just came in, took something we had for someone else," Brooks said.

Brooks has this message for those who stole something for nothing.

"I just don't think they have a soul. I guess it's like the Grinch that stole Christmas. That's what I feel like," Brooks said.

York police are investigating, but no arrests have been made. If you would live to help Operation HomeCare recover from this crime call them at 205-392-9292.
