BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Hundreds of people filled the Cahaba Grand Conference Center Thursday night to see and hear what former U.S. Senator and Presidential candidate Rick Santorum had to say.

John Crawford was one of them. He brought his teenage son to the event. "I think it just helps to get his message across on a personal level and a community level. I believe grassroots efforts is going to be more impactful than anything to get real change," said Crawford.

Santorum's invite comes from the Alabama Policy Institute. One of his key talking points for the evening was what conservatives should look to for a hopeful future.

"We have 30 governors. We have control of I don't remember exactly completed count... but it's close to a majority of legislators and so you really have an opportunity  to see the policies of limited government, of free people, respect and religious liberties.....trying to build strong families and communities," said Santorum.

When asked about Thursday's meeting between President Obama and Governor Mitt Romney Santorum said, "Hopefully, Governor Romney encouraged the President to focus on what the objective should be here and the objective should be to do no harm to the economy. To strengthen the economy."

If nothing else made an impact to hundreds of attendees, Santorum said he wants them to take one thing away from his speech. "The message I want them to go home with is that America is still a great country and it was founded great. It's a country that's, I believe, it's future is bright and we need to get back to the principals that made us unique," said Santorum.
