CHANDLER, TX (KLTV) -

Authorities have released new information on an investigation into the abuse of a 2-year-old East Texas child.

Authorities believe 28-year-old Joshua Robert Williams is responsible for beating his fiance's child back in November. Williams is in the Smith County Jail on a $250,000 bond where he stands charged with injury to a child.

On Friday, Child Protective Services had encouraging news regarding this story. CPS took custody of the child earlier this week. They said while the child is still in the hospital, they hope she will be released sometime next week.

They say considering her injuries, she is recovering well.

"When she is released, she will be placed in foster care," said Shari Pulliam, the media specialist for CPS. "As of right now, while our investigation is ongoing with law enforcement, we think the best place and safest place for this child is in foster care."

Earlier this week, there was some confusion as to what abuse the child suffered. CPS said the blunt force trauma to this little girl was so severe, it was difficult for doctors to determine whether or not she had been sexually abused. However, CPS said doctors in Dallas determined the 2-year-old was not sexually abused.

Authorities said Williams could face more charges as this investigation continues. Williams is the only name KLTV will release in this ongoing investigation to protect the child's identity.
