Jovan Belcher's frantic mother screams, 'Stay with me,' to dying woman

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Jovan Belcher's mother was frantic with grief as she pleaded with dispatchers and her son's dying girlfriend.

"Stay with me," Cheryl Shepherd screams as she repeatedly exhorts dispatchers to get an ambulance to her son's home as quickly as possible to help "Kasi." "The ambulance is on the way! You hear me? You hear me! Kasandra! Stay with me!"

Belcher's mother said Kasandra Perkins was barely conscious but seemed to be hearing what she was saying. The couple had argued in their bedroom when Belcher fired up to nine bullets into her body.

After hearing the shots, Belcher's mother raced into the room where she saw her son kiss his girlfriend on her forehead and apologize, according to the Kansas City Star, KCTV5's reporting partner. The Chiefs linebacker kissed his daughter before fleeing the scene in his Bentley.

Belcher reportedly called Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli and asked him to meet him so he could thank him for everything he had done for him. Belcher asked Pioli to see that both he and Chiefs owner Clark Hunt took care of his daughter, Zoey, who was born Sept. 11.

Coach Romeo Crennel and defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs, who was also Belcher's position coach, tried to persuade Belcher not to take his own life. But as officers arrived, Belcher knelt behind his vehicle and made the sign of the cross over his chest before firing a single bullet into his head.

Officers then asked for paramedics to come to the scene, but they said they expected that Belcher was dead.

Officials released Monday audio recordings in response to requests under the Missouri Sunshine Law. The recordings show police dispatchers handling a multitude of calls and assignments in a short period of time Saturday morning after Belcher snapped.

The first 911 call came about 7:50 a.m. from Belcher's distraught mother.

Belcher's infant daughter could be heard crying in the background during part of the call, which Kansas City police attorneys edited.

Dispatch reports the shooting call at 5401 Crysler Ave. just before 8 a.m. Saturday and says it involves a 22-year-old female who was possibly shot by her son.

Despite Shepherd's frantic pleas, dispatchers did not send the first paramedics as emergency, which means they use lights and sirens.

Officers arrived first to the east Kansas City home where they found Perkins lying on the floor of the master bedroom. Paramedics took Perkins to Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence where she was pronounced dead.

Dispatchers also received 911 calls after Belcher went to Arrowhead Stadium and the Chiefs practice facility. Dispatchers sending officers to the scene say there is a disturbance with an unknown weapon at 1 Arrowhead Dr. at the Chiefs football facility. Officers were told that party was armed and was involved in a confrontation with the general manager.

"It's an unknown party at the practice field. It's in front of the staff, they don't know what he's armed with," the female dispatcher said at 8:03 a.m.

Police records released Monday also shed new details on how Belcher spent his final hours of his life before shooting Perkins and possibly what the couple argued about.

Police say Belcher spent some of his final hours sleeping in his car outside a home of another woman whom he described as his "girlfriend."

Officers were called at 2:52 a.m. Saturday to 701 E. Armour Blvd. on a suspicious person in a vehicle. The 911 caller said the car had been at the location for about two hours.

Police spokesman Darin Snapp said Tuesday that the woman's apartment complex was about 10 miles from the home where Belcher shot and killed Perkins.

When authorities arrived, they spotted Belcher's Bentley in the back of a parking lot. He was seen sleeping in the driver's seat when officers knocked on his window.

Authorities said he was very cooperative with the officers when he exited his vehicle.

Police said Belcher informed the officers that he was there to see his girlfriend and waiting for her to come home. He then made a phone call and a woman let him into the building a few minutes later.

The officers determined that Belcher didn't have any outstanding warrants. They also believed that he may have been drinking but did not slur his words at the time and his balance was good.

Belcher reportedly didn't leave the woman's home until 6:30 a.m. After he arrived home, he argued with Perkins before fatally shooting her about 7:50 a.m.

Belcher was due at Arrowhead at 9:30 a.m. for a mandatory team meeting, which was the day before the Chiefs were to play the Carolina Panthers at the stadium on Sunday.

Zoey is now in Shepherd's care.
