Report: Hornets changing name to Pelicans

Posted: Updated:

Sources tell Yahoo! Sports that the New Orleans Hornets are looking to change their name to the Pelicans as early as next season.

A change has been in the works since Tom Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints, bought the team on April 14. He also acquired the rights to the name Pelicans though other names were considered such as Krewe and Brass.

Louisiana's state bird is the brown pelican which is displayed on both the state flag and seal. New Orleans also had a minor league baseball team named the Pelicans for much of 1887-1959 and 1977.

Gayle Benson recently told Fox Sports New Orleans that she preferred navy blue, red and gold for new team colors.

New Orleans' first NBA team was called the Jazz which now plays in Salt Lake City since 1979.

The Hornets moved to New Orleans from Charlotte in 2002. The Charlotte Bobcats will have a chance to change their own name back to the Hornets once it's available.
