AUBURN, AL (WSFA) -

The Lee County coroner's office is confirming that a double tractor-trailer accident Friday afternoon claimed the life of a Virginia man. The crash occurred at approximately 1pm on Interstate 85 near Auburn.

Auburn Police and Fire and East Alabama Medical Center EMS responded to the scene of the accident near the 55 mile marker of I-85. When they arrived on the scene, they found the driver of one of the tractor-trailers trapped in the wreckage of his vehicle.

Auburn Fire personnel worked for over an hour in an attempt to free 61-year-old Nathaniel Cain from the wreckage of his rig. Lee County Coroner Bill Harris pronounced Cain dead at the scene at 2:15 PM from multiple blunt force injuries.

Two other occupants of Cain's vehicle were transported to EAMC emergency room to be treated for their injuries.

According to the coroner, it appears Cain was traveling north on I-85 when he came upon both lanes of traffic slowed due to another accident farther north. He swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting the vehicles in front of him and struck another tractor trailer in the rear and then went into the guard rail and left the roadway.

The cab portion of the rig separated from the chassis and pinned Cain in the cab.

When rescue personnel got to Cain he was unresponsive. The driver of the tractor trailer that Cain struck was not injured.

Traffic was backed up for several hours until the wreckage could be cleared from the interstate.

The accident remains under investigation by the Auburn Police and the Lee County Coroner's office.
