MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
Sunday, members and leaders of Dexter Avenue Baptist church celebrated 135 years of the church's history.
During the ceremony, leaders announced that starting January 1, the church will have a new pastor.
Dexter Avenue has been without a pastor for a year now and Minister Cromwell Handy will serve as the new pastor.
He is from Montgomery and members who have been with the church for more than 40 years, say they are thrilled to see the church go in a new direction and work on increasing membership.
"We've had goals that were not fulfilled. We've had goals that we've gone overboard and fulfilled. And this time I guess like all other churches, there seems to be a downward trend in members coming to church. History was made and now it's playing out, but now we need to go back to some of those things that brought us thus far," Gary said.
