Families prepare for emotional Slaughter crash trial

SLAUGHTER, LA (WAFB) -

Brett Gerald, the man accused of killing seven people while allegedly driving drunk in May, will head to court Monday for the first day of trial.

Members of one of the families affected by that wreck say they are still suffering from this tragedy seven months later and praying this trial will start their path to finding closure.

"We have to pass that accident scene every time we go to court, and it's hard," said Delia Brady, who lost her mother, a sister and four other family members in the wreck.

Brett Gerald is accused of killing seven people in a late night crash on LA 67 in Slaughter back on the morning of May 30.

"It's been seven months now, and we just want justice," said Marcus Gaines, who lost six family members that night. "The main thing is we just want to make sure this guy is prosecuted to the fullest extent."

Gerald's blood alcohol level was reportedly twice the legal limit when his truck hit the car carrying seven people that night, and the 21-page crash report notes Gerald admitted to having several beers.  This will be Gerald's second official DWI, his first was expunged from his record. Heading into the trial, the family that lost so much that night has their worries.

"We're just praying that the judge makes the right decision and gives this guy the just time that he deserves. I mean he killed seven people. I can't bring my family back, so we're here to defend them," said Gaines.

If convicted, Gerald faces 25 to 30 years in prison per victim. A conviction could only help to ease the Gaines family's pain.

"With family and God we're doing. It's just hard. We want closure. We want to put it behind us so we can try to have a normal life because we'll never be the same," said Brady.

He pleaded not guilty to seven counts of vehicular homicide. The trial starts Monday morning at 9 a.m. in Clinton.
