BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

After visiting the areas affected by the severe weather Monday morning in East Baton Rouge Parish, Mayor-President Melvin "Kip" Holden signed a Local Disaster Declaration. This declaration activates any and all necessary emergency plans and activities in response to this severe weather.

The Mayor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (MOHSEP) is currently conducting preliminary damage assessments within the Parish and has made a request for additional damage assessment teams through the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP).

While the severe weather is no longer a threat to East Baton Rouge Parish, temperatures are expected to decrease over the next 24 hours and citizens should take the necessary precautions.

Mayor Holden urges citizens to stay away from downed power lines and trees, avoid standing water, and continue to monitor local weather and news stations.

"The silver lining in today's tragic events is that there were no reported injuries," stated Mayor Holden.

Red Cross volunteers are opening a shelter Monday night for residents who have storm-related damages. The shelter at Bethany World Prayer Center, 13855 Plank Road, Zachary, will open at 6 p.m.

Red Cross volunteers have been assisting throughout the day in the Baker/Alsen area, as well as later in Ascension Parish. They have provided tarps, as well as food and water.

Residents in need of shelter tonight should bring:

  • prescription and emergency medication
  • medical equipment such as a wheelchair/walker, oxygen, etc.
  • extra clothing
  • pillows
  • blankets and sleeping bags
  • hygiene supplies
  • specialty snacks and juices for those with dietary restrictions
  • supplies for infants
  • other comfort items

And bring special items for children and infants, such as diapers, formulas and toys.
