Lee High School students launch petition drive

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Students at Lee High School say their principal is among those placed on leave as a result of the grade-changing investigation, and they've launched a petition drive.

Lee High School has seen a lot of change and turmoil over the past two years - but some students say principal Lorenza Pharrams turned things around.

"My freshman year, it was crazy," said Anthony Hooks, a sophomore.  "Kids throwing bricks out the window, computers, he came here and changed everything.  Everything."

Hooks is the student who is circulating petitions to get Pharrams re-instated.

"I was in the hospital for my sickle cell disease, and when I come back, he helped me make up my work, and people having credit recovery, trying to get the right grades, trying to finish school, he helped them," Hooks said.

He and other students say the grade changing investigation has given lee another black eye.

"A lot of the people, probably the teachers and stuff felt under pressure, there was a lot of seniors that weren't' supposed to graduate, and they probably felt Lee wasn't meeting their standards," said Kamiesha Cooper, a Freshman.

A spokesman for MPS said the system cannot confirm the identities of the employees placed on leave.
