BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
Authorities say a worker who killed himself inside the federal courthouse in Birmingham went through an employee entrance to avoid a security check.
The U.S. Marshal Service says employee David Williams used an access card to enter the Hugo Black Federal Courthouse building. The card system is in place while renovation work is being done on the main entrance.
Williams didn't walk through the metal detectors that are staffed by security officers. Officials say those procedures are now under review.
Police Sergeant Johnny Williams says the worker shot himself in the head in a clerk's office on the first floor. It happened around 9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13.
