MESA, AZ (CBS5) -
A vehicle burglary suspect abandoned his 3-year-old daughter and tried walk away from police in the parking lot of a shopping complex in Mesa on Sunday night.
Cory William Evans, 34, of Colorado, was booked into jail on three counts of vehicle burglary and one count of child endangerment after he was arrested on suspicion of burglarizing a car at In-and-Out Burger, 1636 S. Stapley Road in Mesa.
Witnesses called police about 10:20 p.m. and officers found Evans' vehicle across the street at a Walmart complex. Police said they found the girl unattended in the car. They said they also found a Colorado identification card belonging to Evans.
Officers saw a man matching witnesses' descriptions of the suspect as he tried to walk from the parking lot and stopped him for questioning.
Property from three vehicle burglaries were found in Evans' vehicle, though he initially denied burglarizing any vehicles, police said.
Child Protective Services was contacted and the agency requested the child be released to her mother.
Evans told police he was visiting from Colorado.
