DESOTO PARISH, LA (KSLA) -
A Houston rapper is out on bond after spending Wednesday night in DeSoto Parish Jail. He was arrested on drugs and weapon charges.
Deputies say 31-year-old Wesley Eric Weston, also known as the rap artist Lil' Flip, was arrested in Mansfield Wednesday afternoon. Weston was arrested after deputies pulled him over for speeding and they allegedly found marijuana and a semi-automatic weapon in his possession. According to the booking sheet, Weston was driving 86 miles per hour in a 75. He was released on a $35,000 bond.
The DeSoto Parish Sheriff's Office tells KSLA News 12 that the type of gun in his possession was a Bushmaster AR-15. The Sheriff's Office says they still have the rifle in evidence and are still investigating where Weston obtained it. This it common in an on-going investigation like this. His arrest is shedding some light on just how common the sale of this specific type of assault weapon has become.
The Bushmaster AR-15 has gained national attention after reportedly being used or in the possession of the gunman in three deadly high profile shootings this year: The recent shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the shooting that killed two firefighters in Webster, New York, and the Aurora, Colorado theatre shooting that left 12 people dead.
Many Americans have strong opinions on gun control and a proposal to reenact a ban on assault weapons. The AR-15 was included in the Federal Assault Weapons Ban which expired in 2004.
President Obama supports reinstating the federal ban on assault weapons. Since giving gun control his support, weapons like the AR-15 have been flying off the shelves in stores across the country, even here in the ArkLaTex. President Obama has called for sweeping gun reform.
