GEORGIANA, AL (WSFA) -

The Christmas Day severe weather outbreak has claimed the life of a Butler County man. 81-year-old Jessie Blackmon died from injuries suffered when a tree fell on his home in Georgiana.  Relatives and neighbors are stunned by Blackmon's death.

The morning after the storms, a family friend noticed something was a bit off at Jessie Blackmon's house on Country Lane in Georgiana. Vanessa Mobley went to check on the man everyone called "Mr. Bruh."

"As I was going up the road, I said there goes a tree on Mr. Bruh's house and he hadn't left, he usually be gone early in the morning to go get his coffee," Mobley said.

Mobley went around to the back of the house and called out for Blackmon.

"He moaned and he said whoo, and he said help.  I said hold on Mr. Bruh, I'm going to find to get some help," Blackmon said.  "So by that time, I looked over and saw the tree laying over on him and he had his head up."

It appeared Blackmon had been lying there all night. Other neighbors came to help get him out of the house. He was airlifted to an area hospital, where he later died.

Blackmon was well known in Georgiana and that section of Butler County.  He was retired, but still wanted to work.

"I could see him now just going across my yard, cutting my grass," said Eloise Thomas, a cousin.  "Oh my goodness, it's hard to take it."

"Everybody loved my dad.  He's just a special person," said Janice Cook, Blackmon's daughter.  "And he's loved by many people in this neighborhood and everybody loved him, because he was never the type to go around sad.  He was always happy."

Family members said Blackmon will be laid to rest on Wednesday.
