Baton Rouge residents feel pressures of looming "Fiscal Cliff"

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Things are up in the air for 2013 when it comes to taxes. President Obama spoke Friday, clearly frustrated over a lack of settlement regarding the so-called "fiscal cliff."

Here in Baton Rouge, people are starting to get nervous with just three days left for Congress and the White House to come to some agreement on the looming fiscal cliff. Some people are praying lawmakers in Washington, D.C. won't wait until the last minute.

"It seems like we're just headed toward that cliff fast and furious and eyes wide open, and no one's doing anything about it," said Baton Rouge resident Dana Cook.

President Obama, says if both sides cannot come to an agreement by the Dec. 31st deadline, he will encourage Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to propose a package in hopes it will go straight to the Senate floor for a vote.

"One that protects middle class from tax hike, extends vital lifeline of unemployment insurance for the 2 million Americans looking for a job and lays the groundwork for future cooperation on more economic growth and deficit reduction," said Obama.

The president says he hopes it will not come to that.

"Well we're now at the last minute. And the American people are not going to have any patience for a politically self-inflicted wound to our economy," said Obama.

In Baton Rouge, some people say they are starting to feel the pressure of the fiscal cliff ping-pong game going on in Washington.

"It's starting to weigh on my mind now as it comes closer to the end of the year," said Demond Harris. "I hope both sides come to an agreement and maybe benefit the middle class."

Others say they will not know how to react to the outcome until it is here.

"It's the unknown about it that is scary. I don't know how it's going to affect me. I think that's the scary part about it. How do you prepare for the unknown?" asked Cook.
