MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
Montgomery's downtown entertainment district was packed with revelers ready to ring in 2013 last night as the city hosted its first ever 'Night of Lights' celebration.
The night's festivities included music by Groove Merchants and Creativity, plus a fireworks show and plenty of confetti. Many downtown restaurants and bars stayed open to serve drinks to the party-goers.
When it came time for the countdown, the city decided to try something different. Instead of dropping an object like a peach or moon pie, they decided to do a virtual rise. The countdown to 2013 was projected onto a downtown building and, as the crown chanted along, an image displaying the countdown ascended the building.
Amid the celebration, one woman told WSFA 12 News, "it was awesome. I couldn't have pictured it better. It was awesome!"
Another reveler was glad that Montgomery has started its own New Year's celebration.
"We're happy to see Montgomery upgrade and get a good New Year's party going. We really needed this. It's big for our city."
The music and festivities continued well past midnight.
