Albany, GA (WTVM) -
Charges are pending against a Lee County woman who is accused of ramming into a police car while texting and driving.
Police say 22-year-old Lauren Owens' Nissan pathfinder slammed into an Albany police cruiser around 2:30 Tuesday morning, then slammed into a parked car.
Investigators say Owens was checking her text messages when she crashed. Forty-four year old officer Garnet Lincey was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The man in the other car, 32-year-old Timmie Shelton, was not injured. Following the accident, police want to remind drivers again about the texting and driving law.
"It is against the law to text and drive in the state of Georgia and this clearly shows the potential danger that that could cause," said Phyllis Banks with the Albany Police Department. "If you could just wait a few seconds to either read or send a text you may save someone's life.
The officer is now out of the hospital and Lauren Owens will face charges including failure to maintain a lane, texting while driving, and not having her license.
