BR Metro Council members take oaths of office

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A new year brings four new faces to the Baton Rouge Metro Council.

Twelve Metro Council members were sworn-in for four-year terms Wednesday morning.

One-third of that dozen is new: Chauna Banks-Daniel, Buddy Amoroso, Ryan Heck and John Delgado.

Some of the returning council members say they have the same old issues to deal with.

"Still have bridges that are failing, road improvements, traffic is on everybody's radar now," said Chandler Loupe.

Two of the new council members say they want to put an end to some long unsettled problems.

"The sanitary sewer overflow project," said John Delgado.  "That has to do with fixing what has been a 40 year bad sewer system that we've had.  Getting to that is priority to me."

Councilwoman Chauna Banks-Daniel says she and Councilwoman Tara Wicker have placed the North Baton Rouge Wastewaste Plant issue on the January 9 agenda.  Banks-Daniel says she's spoken with residents about the buyout issue that was rejected last year by the old council, and hopes to have some new suggestions on what steps the council should take next to resolve things.

Though most of the members have hopes of working together, there will at times be disagreements.  However one thing they unanimously agreed on, naming Chandler Loupe the new Mayor Pro-Tem.  That position was previously held by former Councilman Mike Walker.

Parish Assessor Brian Wilson was also sworn-in.

Mayor Kip Holden was sworn-in just after midnight on Jan. 1.

He will have a more public, ceremonial swearing-in event on Friday.
