Rep. Roby sworn into office as 113th Congress begins

U.S. Representative Martha Roby (R-AL) Thursday was sworn into office for her second term in the U.S. House of Representatives on the opening day of the 113th Congress.  

"I'm grateful for the distinct honor of representing the people of Alabama's 2nd Congressional District," Rep. Roby said. "We have our work cut out for us in the 113th Congress. From the budget deficit and our growing debt to this continued economic slump, our country faces some serious challenges. I'm committed to working to address these issues and to ensure Alabama's commonsense, conservative values always have a voice in Washington."

Rep. Roby will retain her committee assignments on the prestigious House Armed Services Committee, the House Committee on Agriculture and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, each of which directly impacts Alabama's 2nd Congressional District. Rep. Roby thanked House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) for her committee reassignments.  

"I appreciate the opportunity to serve on the House Armed Services Committee, the House Committee on Agriculture, and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce so I can personally oversee issues that directly affect my constituents. These committee assignments are a perfect fit for the district I represent, and I thank Speaker Boehner for recognizing that." 

Rep. Roby will continue to work with her district-based constituent issue groups, including her Defense and Veterans Advisory Panel and Agriculture Advisory Panel. She will also continue regular education roundtable meetings with school teachers, parents, principals, school board members and superintendents throughout the 2nd District.  

Rep. Roby maintains three district offices in addition to her Washington, D.C. office, where constituents can seek assistance or express concerns over federal issues.

 Background on Committees  

  • The House Armed Services Committee is charged with oversight of the military and has jurisdiction over general defense policy, ongoing military operations, acquisition and industrial base policy, the organization and reform of the Department of Defense, counter-drug programs, and nonproliferation programs.. With Alabama's 2nd  Congressional District home to two military installations – Fort Rucker in South Alabama and Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base in Montgomery – this Committee is of particular importance for Congressman Roby.
     
  • The House Committee on Agriculture oversees vast farming and nutrition policy issues, including agricultural production, price stabilization, commodity exchanges, crop insurance and soil conservation, crop and livestock inspection, agricultural engineering, water conservation, and rural development. The Committee also shares jurisdiction over financial services regulations and is responsible for crafting the "Farm Bill," which ensures that farmers and ranchers have the resources they need to produce an abundant and affordable food supply in accordance with U.S national security interests.
     
  • The House Committee on Education and the Workforce oversees programs affecting a wide range of policy regarding education, job training, labor law and retirement security. The Committee has jurisdiction over education from early learning through the high school level including elementary and secondary education, special education, career and technical education, school safety and alcohol and drug abuse prevention, school lunch and child nutrition programs.
