Missing Wetumpka man's truck, body found in pond

The Alabama Department of Public Safety is cancelling a Missing Senior Alert for a Wetumpka man after the discovery of his body in a pond on family property Wednesday afternoon.

The alert was issued for William Edward Hobbs, 65, Tuesday, one day after he was seen leaving his home. He was en route to a couple of business meetings, according to authorities.

"A neighbor noticed an indention near the water's edge," said Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin of an area along Jasmine Hollow Road in Wetumpka. "It's a grassy area so we decided to go ahead and check it out," Franklin explained.

Divers were sent into the water and around 12:30pm divers made the discovery.  "We don't know if he had a heart attack or a seizure," Franklin said, adding that Hobbs had terminal cancer. "Divers found the truck and later his body in about 12 feet of water."

Franklin is calling Hobbs' death "accidental".

Through the sheriff, Hobbs' family declined to speak on the situation.

Sheriff Franklin says he hopes to get a better idea of what happened after results come back from the Department of Forensics later this week.
