Mother protects children, shoots burglar

LOGANVILLE, GA -

A Georgia mother hiding in a crawlspace with her children had to protect her children after she came face-to-face with a burglar.

Melinda Herman was home with her children when Paul Slater, 32, used a crowbar to break into the house. Police say Slater went after one of Herman's nine-year-old twins as they fled upstairs, then broke through a locked bedroom and bathroom before finding the attic where the family was hiding.

Herman called her husband Donnie, who was at work. Donnie then called 911 while remaining on the phone with his wife.

"Melinda, If he opens that door, you shoot, you shoot him, you understand," Donnie instructed his wife. "Just remember everything that I showed you, everything that I taught you, alright?"

Armed with a .38-caliber revolver, Melinda waited anxiously with her children. As Slater came through the door, Melinda began firing.

Slater was shot five times in the face and neck, but managed to stumble out and drive away before crashing his SUV up the road. He is clinging to life at an Atlanta hospital, unable to breathe on his own. He is accused of burglary and unlawful entry. Last year, he served six months in jail for battery and has at least six other arrests on his record.

Donnie Herman says his family doesn't apologize and that his wife is still very upset, so she's not talking publicly. She works from home and had just learned to use the handgun.
