BURLINGTON, KY (FOX19) -

A man accused of murdering his parents in Boone County will now serve as co-counsel in his own trial.

Michael Moore is facing murder, tampering with evidence, falsely reporting an incident and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon charges for the 2009 deaths of his parents, Warren and Madge Moore, of Union.

In a rare act, Judge Anthony Frohlich agreed to let Moore serve as co-counsel in his murder trial. Moore said he has confidence in his attorneys, but he wants to have a say in what happens during his trial.

Moore is a former police officer, but doesn't have any other experience in criminal justice.

Prosecutors say they are concerned because family members will be testifying, and they have expressed concerns about being intimidated.

Another pre trial hearing is scheduled for Feb. 21.
