Man dies in shootout with police after chase along I-435

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A deadly shootout between a man and police shut down part of Interstate 435 early Tuesday morning.

Independence police tried to make a routine traffic stop about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday near 20th Street and Sterling Avenue after officers ran Todd S. Weber's license plates.

Weber refused to stop for officers, so police continued to pursue him.  He was driving a pickup pulling a utility trailer.

Authorities said it was a relatively low-speed chase. Speeds never went over 40 mph, police said, as Weber led authorities on about a 6-mile, one-and-a-half hour pursuit.

The chase went from Independence into Kansas City, then across the river into Clay County, and then back south of the river.

Independence and Kansas City police, along with Clay County and Jackson County sheriff's deputies took part in the pursuit.

During the pursuit, Weber was seen putting a handgun to his head as he was driving.  At one point Clay County deputies had he stopped, but when they approached the truck they saw he had the gun to his head so they backed off.

Weber then took off driving again.  Authorities used spike strips to puncture the pickup's tires during the pursuit.  Speeds during that pursuit slowed to as low as 4 mph.

Shortly before 2 a.m. police said Weber jumped out of his vehicle on southbound I-435 near Front Street and began shooting at Kansas City officers.

Kansas City officers returned gun fire killing him.

One police officer was grazed by a bullet, but no one else was wounded.

All north and southbound lanes of I-435 between Front Street and U.S. Highway 24 reopened about 8 a.m.
