SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -
Multiple Springfield fire crews responded to 258 Locust Street in Springfield just after 4:30 for a fire at an abandoned apartment building.
Firefighters used two ladder engines to fight the fire from the roof.
Fire officials told CBS 3 Springfield the fire rapidly spread from the first floors.
Once much of the smoke was controlled firefighters were able to take a look inside.
They said the apartment building at 258 as well as a row of several apartment buildings was closed down about a year and a half ago because of fire and housing code violations.
Firefighters had power crews checking to see if there is power running to the building
Neighbors say that they have seen workers clearing this building out lately.
Fire officials are still investigating the cause.
