HOLYOKE, MA (WSHM) -
The deadline to apply for a casino license in Massachusetts has passed, but a casino developer interested in building in Holyoke wants more time.
Paper City Development has sent a petition to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission because they want to get a casino question on the ballot for a potential special election to replace Sen. John Kerry. They are asking for 30 days after the election to submit an application.
Mayor Alex Morse told CBS 3 in a statement that he is pleased Paper City Development failed to submit their application today. He says he doesn't want a casino in Holyoke changing his previous opinion for a second time.
"I urge the commission to abide by their own timeline and resist playing politics with Paper City Development. They had their opportunity to put down the $400,000 and they missed it," said Morse.
Paul Nicholai is representing Paper City and said if the people of Holyoke show they want a casino the mayor should allow it to happen.
Since this is the first deadline, this is the first time someone has asked for an extension.
Nicholai said the commission does have the power to extend that deadline. He doesn't know how long it will be until he could get an answer from the commission, but said they have acknowledged they have the petition.
