SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -
Springfield police are investigating the city's second murder of the year. Jimmie Acevedo, 42, was fatally shot multiple times Wednesday morning.
"Officers responded right away, provided first aid for that gentleman, he was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead shortly thereafter," said Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.
The shooting happened around 6 a.m. on Monmouth Street.
"There was some evidence in the area that there was definitely two suspects," Delaney said. "Talking to people in the neighborhood, there was two people who were seen fleeing the area on foot."
For much of the morning a portion of the street was blocked off as detectives from the homicide unit conducted their investigation.
"We're not really saying what the motive is right now," Delaney said. "Detectives are definitely following leads in regards to that."
Many neighbors like Andrea Hatcher awoke to the crime scene.
"I came out and my neighbor across the street was saying that there was something down the street," said Hatcher. "And I came out and I saw the trucks down there."
Hatcher lives right around the corner from where the shooting happened.
"This is one of the nicest neighborhoods, but crime and tragedy - it can happen anywhere," Hatcher said.
If you have any information about the shooting you are asked to call the Springfield police at 413-787-6355 or you can text a tip to CRIMES or 274637. In the message type "SOLVE" and your information.
