High school student reaches out to the homeless

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Not everyone has clothes to bundle up in and a heater to keep them warm during the cold winter months, but a St. Patrick sophomore student is trying to change that.

Katie Miller was just a young girl when she learned a lot of people don't have a place to call home, and it's always bothered her.

"Sometimes the community doesn't think about how many of them there actually are," Miller said.

When she was tasked with completing a service project for religion class, Miller knew exactly what she wanted to do. She created Katie's Kause for the homeless, a collection drive for socks, gloves, scarves and hats.

"With my Christian background, I knew that was something Jesus would do," Miller said.

She set up four collection sites and her mom even helped out by picking up items from people who could not drop them off. Miller said she was overwhelmed with the outpouring of help she received.

"I'm just so proud of everyone in the community and everything I have gotten, I was in shock," Miller said.

She collected dozens of bags in just three weeks and donated them all to the Salvation Army. Major Terry Ray said Miller's collection will save lives.

"The elements are enough people can succumb to them, so with Katie's help and this donation, we are able to make sure that people that may not feel comfortable coming in at night can get some warm clothing for the weather," Major Ray said.

"Sometimes you just have to think of others and put them first, you have to take care of yourself. But there are people out there that need more than you do and it could always be worse," Miller said.

Major Ray said it is inspiring to see someone so young making such a big difference.

"We appreciate the socks off of her and we are glad she is helping out, no pun intended. But we are certainly pleased she is helping out in this manner. It goes a long way," Major Ray said.

Miller's act of kindness has already spread, she has been asked to come speak at a local elementary school and help them with another collection drive at the end of the month.
