High wind knocks out power for Consumer Energy customers

JACKSON, MI (WTOL) - Consumer Energy reports approximately 22,500 of its electric customers are without service as of 11:30 a.m., Sunday.

Officials say high winds are to blame. A powerful winter storm hit the state late Saturday night and early Sunday morning.

Since 9 p.m. Saturday, more than 74,800 customers have been affected by weather-related outages.

"Our crews have been working since the storm hit to restore power and make situations safe where downed power lines posed public safety hazards, said Garrick Rochow, the vice president of energy delivery for Consumer Energy. "We ask for our customers' patience as we work to get the power restored as safety and quickly as possible in these challenging winter conditions."

Officials say more than 1,100 Consumers Energy and contract employees are working on storm restoration efforts across the state.

The following counties were affected: Allegan (1,020); Barry (842); Bay (479); Calhoun (980); Clare (806); Eaton (1,237); Genesee (1,021); Hillsdale (1,035); Ingham (1,117); Jackson (1,438); Kalamazoo (1,266); Kent (4,174); Livingston (1,135); Muskegon (2,152); Ottawa (326); Saginaw (585); Shiawassee (614) and Washtenaw (557).

Power is expected to be restored by the end of the day Monday. Customers can get an updated outage information at www.consumersenergy.com/outagemap.

If residents spot a downed wire, they're asked to call 1-800-477-5050, or their local law enforcement agency.

Our Saturday weather was right on par with what we have been dealing with across central and south Alabama all week long... it was hot (temperatures made their way into the low/mid 90s), it was humid (heat index values went above 100° in many towns) and we saw some relief from the heat thanks to a few isolated areas of rain.
