Warming Center open in Flint

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Michigan winters undoubtedly pack a punch. The Arctic temperatures Monday night made it dangerously cold to be outside. And for some in Flint who may have had to face sleeping in the single-digit temperatures, they're counting their blessings.

The Holy Angels Warming Center gave a warm, and more importantly, safe place for some homeless folks to go.

"If this wasn't here, people would be frozen," said Marquavis Overton.

Overton said it was a real possibility he could have died Monday night if he was forced to sleep outside.  But he's thankful for the warming center on Fifth Avenue, just north of Downtown Flint.  Catherine Pettit is a staff member at Holy Angels and she said this center is a real godsend.

"We don't like to leave anybody out in this kind of weather," said Pettit.

The center is big enough for 40-some people and by 7 p.m. Monday, the center reached full capacity.

"It's warmer in here than it is out there, so that's a good thing," said Overton. "That's all that matters."

The center has been open in Flint since December, 2010.  Last winter, nearly 10,000 visitors came in from the cold to take advantage of the heat inside.  This center is open through March 31 of this year.  It is housed in the Catholic Charities Center for Hope on Fifth Avenue in Flint.

If you'd like to learn more information or would like to help out with a donation, you can call Catholic Charities of Genesee County at (810) 785-6911.
