Wind chill advisory in effect until 1 p.m.

SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

A wind chill advisory remains in effect for the TV5 viewing area until 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

The alert was issued at 7 p.m. Monday evening as Arctic air pushed into the region. Wind chill values are expected to fall to 10-15 degrees below zero.

The advisory is in effect for Alcona, Arenac, Bay, Genesee, Gladwin, Gratiot, Huron, Iosco, Isabella, Midland, Ogemaw, Saginaw, Sanilac, Shiawassee and Tuscola counties.

Mid-Michigan is getting hit with the coldest temperatures so far this winter, so make sure your children are dressed warm enough for the bus stop or drive them to school.

And when those temperatures plunge, the cold weather is not just dangerous for humans.

It can also be deadly for your pets. The humane society says pets should not be left outside for any extended period of time.

If dogs do spend most of their time outside, give them extra food. They'll need those extra calories to keep warm.

Also make sure they have access to fresh, unfrozen water, and make sure they have shelter to protect them from the wind and bedding to insulate them.

And if you see an animal that is stuck in the cold, call animal control.

Also, this is a good time to check on your elderly loved ones.
