If the Darton baseball team falls short of a conference championship this season it won't be because of a lack of talent. The Cavs not only bring back several starting sophomores but several key transfers as well.
Center fielder Cody Adams played at Georgia State last year and new 2nd baseman Nate Ferrell hit .379 for Andrew College last season. The Cavs also will start Casey Moody as their number one ace on the mound. Moody was a non qualifier at Georgia and a late commitment last fall.
Darton also returns all conference shortstop Cody Wofford. The Cavaliers are coming off a season where it set a new school record in wins with an overall record of 38-20. A total of eleven team and individual records were broken in 2012 including among others: team runs scored(345), team RBIs(307), and team stolen bases(122). Four Cavaliers earned All-Conference accolades. Three defenders were placed on the GCAA Gold Glove team.
Head coach Scot Hemmings enters his second year as head coach and hopes all the talent on paper transfers to the field.
"They made the comment the other day, anything less than a conference championship is huge disappointment and in some regards I completely agree with them. There are 6 or 7 Division I prospects out here. There's plenty of talent to do it now they've got to go out and execute." Said Hemmings
Darton pitcher A.J. Sunstrom said "Our coaches have prepared us well in the off season. We've had a lot of conditioning and I think that we have the right guys in the right places."
Cavs open the season this Friday in the First Pitch Classic at Gulf Coast Community College at 1 p.m.
