Coast Guard practices ice rescue in subzero temps

BAY COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

The Coast Guard held a mock ice rescue on one of the coldest nights of the year. Temperatures on the Saginaw Bay were at least 10 below zero when members practiced rescuing a teammate from the frigid water.

"Most search and rescue cases happen in the worst conditions," said Justin Abold, one of the trainers.

Abold said the conditions were perfect for the drill. Everyone was outfitted with a dry suit to keep them warm, even in the water.

Coast Guard members from all over the country learn ice rescue techniques at the Saginaw River Station in Essexville. The training session included people from Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Vermont. Members will take their skills with them to teach other units.
