GRAND BLANC, MI (WNEM) -

General Motors is continuing to meet with United Auto Worker members about a facility in Grand Blanc that is slated to close.

WNEM has learned that the automaker is offering buyouts to workers at the Grand Blanc North American Tooling Center.

The Grand Blanc plant has about 320 employees who belong to UAW Local 1292.

The Detroit News reports the buyout will be offered to skilled trades workers and would be a $65,000 lump sum payment.   Most of the employees at the site are at or near the retirement age.

Those employees can choose to retire, or leave the company. Workers are also being offered the chance to transfer to another GM facility. The employees will be offered transfers to Flint Tool and Die, the Warren Tech Center and the Parma Metal Center in Parma, OH, a suburb of Cleveland.

Employees at other GM sites in Michigan are being given the option to accept an early retirement, and Grand Blanc Weld Tool Center employees could fill those gaps.

The automaker announced last week the plant will close in July.
