MT. PLEASANT, MI (WNEM) -
Central Michigan University has dedicated a display in the Events Center to commemorate the history and culture of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe.
"This celebration gives us the opportunity to come together to energize and expand CMU's ongoing partnership with the tribe," said CMU President George E. Ross. "CMU cherishes its rich relationship with the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, which has opened the doors to many cultural and educational opportunities that would not exist otherwise."
In 2007, when CMU began plans for construction of the Events Center, the university discussed the designation of space to feature the natural history of the Native American population of the Mid-Michigan region and its historical relationship with CMU.
"This space, which communicates the history, the relationship between a university and a tribe, will always be a reminder to CMU visitors that our community and campus value our relationship with the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe," said Dave Heeke, CMU Athletics Director.
CMU adopted the Chippewa name in 1942 to reflect the rich Native American heritage of the region, recognizing the tribe's proud culture and competitive nature. It is this legacy upon which CMU embraces its championship culture.
The display, located in the southeast corridor of the Events Center, features art and artifacts from the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe's Ziibiwing Center. It was dedicated Wednesday night.
