Residents voice concerns over possible Springfield casino

Friday, the city announced it was delaying their decision on whether they will negotiate a host agreement with MGM, Penn National or or both casinos.

That decision date has been pushed back to Feb. 11.

Saturday, a group of community organizers, union workers and concerned residents met at the Gerena Magnet School in Springfield's North End.

It was the group's first meeting to discuss what they would like to see included in a potential host agreement to benefit the city.

Those in attendance say there are several issues that can be addressed, including unemployment, housing and education.

Part of the group's housing concern is that a new casino will increase property values, which in turn will increase cost of living expenses like rent.

They said a casino hiring local residents could potentially help to off-set that issue.

The group does plan on meeting again soon, however, no date has been set yet for their next meeting.
