Weather forecasters say many parts of Michigan will be meeting or beating high-temperature records.
TV5 Meteorologist Catherine Bodak's forecast says Mid Michigan's recent weather will resemble conditions closer to what we would experience in the spring rather than the middle of winter. Rain is likely today and tonight as a very strong low pressure system lifts through the area pulling additional warmth and moisture. Thunderstorms and heavy rain are possible as well as areas of dense fog and freezing rain. Temperatures will be in record territory this afternoon as they soar into the mid/upper 50s. The combination of melting snow and rapid runoff on the frozen ground will bring the potential for localized flooding. Much colder weather will make a return to the area by the end of the workweek.
Meteorologist Matt Mosteiko of the National Weather Service in Oakland County's White Lake Township says the Detroit area is expected to reach Tuesday's high temperature of 58 degrees set in 1914. He says the temperature Wednesday is expected to top the record of 53 for that day in 1969.
He says Flint, Saginaw and other areas also are expected "to make a run" at their record temperatures in the low 50s.
Mosteiko says strong south winds and a strong jet stream are bringing temperatures and precipitation more typical of the southern U.S. The weather pattern also has brought dense fog and flooding.
He says the winter warmth ends with a cold front coming Wednesday.
