    In my editorial on Tuesday I chided our legislators for being the last state to pass a no-brainer  bill legalizing home brewing.  Today I want to challenge them to be one of the first states to pass another no-brainer;

    Kudos, or perhaps, cheers to the Alabama Legislature for passing HB9, the home brewing bill. Legalized home brewing may not be up there with education reform or prison funding, but it was overdue.

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Right is right and wrong is wrong as the saying goes.  By now, most everyone has heard about the sexual misconduct perpetuated against female inmates at the Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women; a deeply disturbing environment where some male guards ruled with fear and intimidation in order to satisfy their illicit desires with these female inmates. 

We have laws in this state to protect all – laws in place to protect even those that have been convicted of breaking laws themselves. How can we ever attempt to rehabilitate individuals serving time by telling them to do right when we have individuals treating them wrongly?

Following a "scathing" report filed by a team of consultants from the National Institute of Corrections changes have already begun at this Alabama prison and watch for similar changes in all Alabama prisons.

No two ways about it, this is a black eye on our State of Alabama prison system. The actions by these men cannot be taken back unfortunately, but we can control how we respond to these findings, punish these individuals and manage our prison system going forward.  This should have never happened in the first place and if the right people, policies, protocol and accountability measures are in put place – it should never happen again.
