ROGERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Strong winds tore the steeple off a Shoals church Wednesday morning.

The First Cumberland Presbyterian Church suffered major damage from Wednesday's storms.

The strong wind and rain knocked the steeple off the roof of the church.

"We're just thankful for the Lord that no one was hurt, and this can be replaced; we have insurance," said Jim Godsey.

Godsey said he got a call from the pastor early in the morning saying the church had been damaged.

"He said we got a mess Jim."

The steeple of the church now sits in pieces on the ground.

"The big damage is here in the sanctuary where it tumbled it and tore holes through the roof," said Godsey. "About three years ago we took the steeple off and rebuilt it refurbished it, put a new roof on, and put it back up there better than it ever was. It really looked good up there but it don't look so good now."

Godsey said he has faith the church will be repaired soon.

"We got a lovely campus here and we're proud of it and it will be beautiful again."

The church elders will meet at 6 p.m. to discuss the damages.
