EDWARDSVILLE, IL (AP) -
An Arizona woman is being held in the Madison County Jail on money laundering charges after police found about $1.5 million in cash in her car during a traffic stop.
Carole I. Galvez of Gila Bend was charged Monday and is being held in lieu of $500,000 bond.
Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons announced Wednesday a state trooper on Saturday stopped the 62-year-old woman's auto on Interstate 55 near Collinsville for improper lane usage.
Authorities say their conversation led the trooper to believe the woman was engaged in criminal activity. After being given consent, a search of the car by police revealed the cash.
State Police Captain Brad Parsons says cash amounts of that size are usually connected to illegal drug trafficking.
